Hospital Insurance-Part A.
Medicare hospital insurance helps purchase three types of care: (1) inpatient hospital care; and, when medically necessary following a hospital stay, (2) inpatient care in a skilled nursing facility, and (3) home healthcare.
Eligibility Requirements. Persons that are eligible for benefits underneath the basic hospital insurance policy are: (1) those who have attained age 65 and also have worked long enough to become insured under social security or the railroad retirement system or those who are entitled to monthly social security or railroad retirement benefits; (2) persons under 65 who’ve been eligible for social security disability benefits for 24 months; (3) a widow, age 50 or older, who is eligible for a mother’s benefit or who’d happen to be entitled to a widow’s benefit by reason of disability if she’d filed; and (4) persons, regardless of age, when there is an excuse for maintenance dialysis or a kidney transplant due to permanent kidney failure if insured or receiving monthly benefits under social security or the railroad retirement system.

The fundamental benefit period which measures the use of hospital services is for 90 days. Additionally, there are 60 reserve days that can be used when the patient is hospitalized for more than 90 days. Reserve days are not renewable. That is, once a reserve day has been used it is not given back.
