What You Need to Know to Survive in the Wilderness

Wilderness survival was at one point in time a part of everyday life. Even if you feel protected and safe in your cocoon of modern living it is still a good plan to have some of the survival skills that could keep you alive in a bad situation. Many people believe that survival skills are only for outdoor enthusiasts, backpackers and sportsmen; but this is not the case.

You might be asking what survival skills are. These are the techniques and know-how that could keep you alive in dangerous locations or hazardous conditions. These techniques could save your life should you find yourself in an extreme environment such as a jungle, desert, or mountains; or if you are in a bad storm or earthquake. Some of the skills you should learn include how to build a shelter, how to pack a survival kit, how to gain clean drinking water, and how to build a fire. These are universal skills that could help you no matter what the situation or circumstance. These universal skills will be able to help you survive in any situation you find yourself in

The next couple of paragraphs will look at these survival skills and give you a better understanding what each skill entails. The order of focus for survival skills relate to the basic human needs and the circumstance you find yourself in. Shelter is usually the first task to take on when you find yourself in a bad situation, this will give you protection from the harsh conditions. This is your immediate focus but if does not matter what the shelter consists of, it could be a lean-to or a poncho shelter.

Getting clean drinking water is the next most important element to surviving a hazardous situation. This can be done in a number of ways. This all depends on where you are, if you are in the jungle you could use condensation traps but other places you might be able to find a stream or river. You water should be brought to a boil before you drink it.

To boil your water you will need fire, and this is the next survival skill you will need. Fire is necessary for protection and warmth, it can keep animals and insects away as well as dry your cloths and keep you warm at night. While a fire can make surviving easier, in most situations a shelter is more important.

Next we will look at the survival kit, depending on the situation surrounding your survival you may not have a survival kit. I suggest every survival bag should have a survival guide and a first aid kit. You need to tend to your injuries in the wild before they get worse.
