The fundamental benefit period which measures the use of hospital services is for 90 days. Additionally, there are 60 reserve days that can be used when the patient is hospitalized for more than 90 days. Reserve days are not renewable. That is, once a reserve day has been used it is not given back. However, when the insured continues to be from a medical facility or any other facility providing skilled nursing or rehabilitation services for 60 consecutive days, a brand new benefit period begins upon readmission to some hospital.
